Work Process

Because each project is unique, there is not a standard plan I abide by for every project. At the start of our collaboration, I will formulate a customised plan for you. However through my experiences, I have found most projects generally go through the following stages (please note stages 5-9 will only apply to services involving website development);

1. Initial Consultations

   At this stage, I will discuss with you in detail exactly what your desired results are. Typically this will take place via telephone or email but if necessary, face-to-face meetings can be arranged. You will provide me with any relevant material to the project and highlight any important issues or strategies that you feel I should be aware of prior to embarking onto the next stage.

   From these discussions I will provide you with the total cost of the services and also the customised project plan.

2. Planning

   Following on from our discussions, I will begin to define the objective(s) of the project and identify your target audience. Any research into laying the foundations for the direction or theme of the design will be carried out here. I will then use the material you provide me to create the content, graphics and other elements of the project. Once all this is complete, I will present you with a timescale for the project.

3. Design

   Here, I will produce several designs based on your criteria and will then present them to you for feedback. I will use your comments to further develop your preferred design and make changes in order to reach a design that meets your expectations.

4. Refinement

   Once the final design has been completed, I will present it to you again and if at all necessary, make any amendments to it.

5. Build

   At this stage, I will hand code and turn the design into a fully functional, W3C standards compliant, accessible and usable website.

6. Testing & Debugging

   Once the website has been developed, I will test and debug to ensure it is functioning on all major browsers (Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, Opera, Google Chrome etc) and platforms (PC/Mac). I will also make sure all meta-data and SEO strategy has been integrated smoothly.

7. Deployment

   Once the website is running perfectly, I will upload it to the Internet for all to visit.

8. Promotion

   Now that your website is live, I will submit it to search engines and carry out any marketing plans in place to attract visitors.

9. Maintenance

   To continue building success to your website, it is essential content is regularly updated. If you require my services for this, a maintenance contract can be drawn up for however long you need my help.

FAQ's

• What do I have to do or supply to have you work on my project?

  To start a project, you will need to supply me with all the relevant content that will be used. I require text documents be given in a readable format such as Microsoft Word, Notepad, Excel etc and any images be in an image format such as JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP etc. You will not need to organise the content, but if you wish for certain material to appear on specific areas, then please specify this. After supplying all the relevant information, I will contact you when necessary to confirm or make changes to the work in progress. • How much do you charge?

  The amount I charge will depend on the project itself. For graphic design projects, the prices range from £50 to £100. For website design/development, it will vary based on the size and type of website you require. I prefer to work on a fixed fee rather than a per-hour or per-day basis but in some cases (e.g. if you hire me for site maintenance), I will opt to charge per-hour/ per-day.

  I ask that 50% of the price be paid prior to commencement of the project and the remaining 50% be paid upon completion of the project.

• How long will it take for you to complete my project?

  I aim to complete graphic design projects within 2-3 days including revisions of designs if necessary.

  Website/template design is completed in approximately 4-5 days and population of website content will depend on the quantity of the content and the type of website. Small to medium volumes can take up to 3-5 days whereas larger, more complex website running on a CMS will require approximately 2 weeks. I will give you an estimated time frame at the start of the project based on the individual requirements of your website.

• Are there any projects you will not undertake?

  I will not take on any projects that include material promoting racism, anti-social behaviour, violence, pornography or oppression to individuals based on their beliefs, gender or origin.

• I would like to hire your services but my project requires something not in your skill set, what can I do?

  I have a close-knit group of fellow programmers and designers who I occasionally contact to integrate any parts of a project that require skills outside my competence level. I will not lie to you and claim to be a know-it-all. In such a situation, I will inform you and give you the option of managing the relationship yourself or allowing me to do so on your behalf.

• Do you offer any discounts?

  Yes. I offer discounts to charities, religious and non-profit organisations. I will also consider offering discounts to other companies depending on the project itself. Please contact me for more information.

Any personal information you give to me will always be processed in accordance with the UK Data Protection Act 1998. I will only use the personal information you provide to deliver the services you have requested, or for lawful, disclosed purposes. I will not make your personal details available without your consent, unless obliged by law.

The increasing popularity of the internet has led to people accessing it using non-traditional devices such as mobile phones, PDAs and WebTV. Technologies such as screen readers, text-only browsers (e.g. Lynx) and screen magnifiers have also been designed to enable those with accessibility issues to use the world wide web. In accordance with the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SENDA) Act 2001, I make every effort to ensure that all my websites conform to the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. This website meets all Priority 1 and 2 checkpoints but some Priority 3 checkpoints have not been included such as the use of access keys as I personally feel these are a nuisance to most users.

The XHTML and CSS code used to create this website are both validated and structured semantic markup is used wherever necessary. The website has been tested across all major browsers and displays correctly.

Below are some of the accessibility features incorporated into this website:

• All links are written to describe their context and have additional title attributes to describe them in greater detail. No link texts are duplicated nor do they open in a new browser window without prior warning. The Privacy Statement, Accessibility Statement and Terms and Conditions can be accessed from every page.
• All images (unless they only serve decorative purposed) include a descriptive ALT attribute.
• Foreground and background colours on the website contrast well and colour is not used as a sole method of grouping data.
• All abbreviations and acronyms are expanded in the markup of the text where applicable.
• Site navigation is laid out in a logical manner and tab order controls have been set for all links.
• No tables are used for layout. All presentational and structural layout is dictated by CSS which uses relative font sizes and content retains sense in older browsers that do not support style sheets.
• Users can access the website whether or not they have javascript enabled.
